Magnificent antique thirteen-piece carved American oak dining set by R.J. Horner, circa 1885. The set is comprised of table, ten chairs (two arm, eight side), sideboard and china cabinet. Carved table with racetrack edge is supported by four full standing winged-griffins with shielded chests and wrapped tails on a substantial pedestal resting on claw feet. The table included four fully skirted 24″ leaves. China cabinet glass doors are flanked by barley twists carved from a solid piece of wood, and has an carved cresting piece above. Elaborate sideboard has two standing griffins supporting a center shelf. Both pieces rest on claw feet. The chairs in this set have a band of intricate carving surrounding each chair back. The arched top frames a pair of facing winged griffins. Both armchairs have a carved lions head at each arm with extending wings underneath. The cabriole legs have carvings at the top and claw feet. These chairs were reupholstered twelve years ago and have been very seldom used. They have diamond tufted backs. This set is all made of solid quarter sawn oak and has been restored to perfection.
