1885 50C PR67* Cameo NGC. This sparkling-white Gem combines richly frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields for a bold cameo contrast. Not only are the surfaces devoid of toning, but they are also free of even a single grade-limiting hairline. A razor sharp, Gem quality representative of this low mintage issue at the end of the Seated Half Dollar series. An absolutely phenomenal proof example from a year that has a minimal total coinage of proof and business strike half dollars of 6,130 pieces and earned the NGC coveted star. Production of half dollar business strikes dropped precipitously after the 1878, and branch mints ceased minting halves altogether. Only a few thousand were made each year, but proofs continued to be struck for sale to collectors. Still, just 930 proofs were issued in 1885 and they are scarce today. Population: 2 with 2 finer.
