1898 50C PR67 Cameo NGC. Mostly brilliant with illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields. The heavily frosted features conjure impressive contrast with the remainder of the coin. The strike is exacting even on the forehead curls and the right shield corner. At 735 pieces it is surprising that the mintage of the proof 1898 half dollar is lower than for example the proof 1859 half struck two generations earlier. Most likely numismatists from the turn of the century paid little attention to contemporary coinage and concentrated on colonials and early U.S. series. Census: 19 in 67 Cameo 2 finer (12/06).
