Description:THE poster by Alphonse Mucha that launched an epochMucha’s first and most famous work. The revolutionary lifesize poster where the iconic Sarah Bernhardt is transformed into “idealized Madonna,” an ethereal creature that made Alphonse Mucha an overnight sensation and inspired many artists. GISMONDA reflects the attention Mucha paid to Byzantine and religious themes and effects in his works. It contains all three elements representative of Mucha’s art: the woman, the flower, and "the exoticism of that belongs to Slavonic countries.”

This is the second variant of Gismonda, used to promote the American Tour Sarah Bernhardt made between January and June of 1896. She used the Gismonda poster to publicize her tour, altering the bottom panel of the first variant (there are three) so it read “American Tour,” with the names of her agents underneath.  Bernhardt chose the Strobridge Lithographic Company of Cincinnati to print the poster.

Gismonda profoundly influenced billboard art for many decades, for he presented a standard of elegance and delicacy not previous seen in poster art.
